Travel Tidbits: Country #44: Argentina

September 2024:

Buenos Aires

  • Everyone calls it BA
  • The whole city reminds me of Barcelona with huge vias and avenues
  • They carved up enough of the city for giant parks that it feels really nice
  • The hop-on, hop-off bus was a really nice way to see a bunch of the city over a roughly two-hour period
  • I’m told there is a ring of poverty outside the nice neighborhoods which are mostly clustered together
  • The Puerto Madero neighborhood is really cool
    • Reminds me of the Seaport neighborhood in Boston
    • Safe to walk, even at night, along the riverfront
    • The sunset over the water was amazing
    • The Red Hat office is (where I work) is here
    • The Hilton is pretty nice with a view of the sun rise over the water
    • The Alvear Icon hotel is nice
      • I did five, four-hour meetings with customers over a three day period here on the second floor
        • The first hour in Spanish was brutal
        • By the fourth hour, I could take pretty good notes
        • By the third day, I had chispas and cracked jokes galore in Spanish 🤣
      • The view from the 32nd floor bar/restaurant was amazing. On one side, you could see a nature preserve butted up against the water. On the other side, you could see an amazing view of the city which reminded me of the view of London from the bar at the top of the Shard.
  • The Recoleta neighborhood was really cool with streets full of quaint bars and restaurants
  • San Nicolás
    • Pizzería Güerrín was really cool. The place was WAY bigger than I first expected, and there are all kinds of cool rooms and nooks and crannies
    • Avenida Corrientes felt like the New York City theater district with theaters and lights all up and down the street
